The seventh edition of theEthereum Community Conference (EthCC) 2024 was held in Brussels, bringing together developers, entrepreneurs, investors, and enthusiasts from around the globe. Arguably the largest event in the European blockchain space, EthCC offers unprecedented opportunities for networking, learning, and collaboration.

What is the Ethereum Community Conference?

The Ethereum Community Conference is Europe’s largest annual Ethereum event focused on technology and community. Held in Brussels, it serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and promoting the latest advancements in the Ethereum ecosystem. The event features talks, panels, and workshops facilitated by some of blockchain's most influential figures.

Engaging Side Events

EthCC is less about the main conference— most networking and insights are done at the hundreds of side events. These events create a vibrant ecosystem where attendees can dive into specific topics, engage with thought leaders, and form valuable connections in a relaxed, intimate setting.

We had an extremely busy week meeting and engaging with our ecosystem teams across the Brussels CBD as many of the 200 ecosystems SubQuery supports planned or sponsored side events.

Most days included at least 6 different side events where the team went to meet our partners and customers, meaning after 6 days our wrists were covered by wristbands!

Wristbands representing all the side events we attended (plus some more that didn’t have wristbands!)

For the SubQuery team, EthCC [7] was an absolute blast with insightful talks, powerful presentations, delicious food, and awesome vibes. We loved being part of this innovative community and connecting with fellow web3 enthusiasts. At the same time, we also took the opportunity to catch up with some old customers while building new connections with prospects. Here’s a recap of all the events we have partaken in!

Serverless BXL

The first thing on our EthCC agenda was co-hosting the inaugural Serverless BXL on July 8, 2024. Our COO, James Bayly participated in a panel, entitled: “Enabling AI Function in Blockchain.” Here, James talked about open vs closed-source Language Learning Models (LLMs).

Our Head of Business Development, Marta Adamczyk also moderated a lively panel during Serverless BXL entitled, “Decentralization of Ethereum.”In the discussion on blockchain decentralisation, the topics covered range from architecture, political and logical decentralisation, democracy, and accessibility. Furthermore, Ethereum's current decentralisation challenges were also examined, including a fragmented liqudity landscape and governance issues.

Agents Unleashed

On July 10, our COO, James Bayly participated in another panel, this time at Agents Unleashed. This event was a summit to unite the builders in the Web3 autonomous AI agent space and explore the current use case landscape. The event was hosted by Olas, NEAR, Flock, and others, and featured talks and panels focusing on the future role of AI agents as the next billion internet users and the AI stack's role in enabling this future.

James represented SubQuery while speaking on the panel covering "Infrastructure Progress: Innovations Since Agents Unleashed @EthDenver".

Polkadot Decoded 2024

We had a booth at Polkadot Decoded 2024 where we engaged with some of our partners and customers.

At the same day, James also presented a talk entitled "Decentralise Everything - From RPCs to Storage." His talk highlighted how blockchain technology is transforming trade finance by improving supply chain integration, optimising operations, and decentralising market power. Attendees gained valuable insights from real-world examples and learned about the future potential of these technologies.

The Nebular and Modular Summit

In the later part of the week, we also attended two bustling events. The Nebular Summit was the premier developer conference focussed on modular appchains and the Cosmos ecosystem while the Modular Summit, which was organised by Celestia, centered around projects with modular architecture.

These gatherings provided excellent opportunities to engage with Cosmos teams, fostering insightful discussions with notable projects such as Agoric, Archway, Axone (formerly OKP4) and dYdX.

Final Thoughts

EthCC 2024 in Brussels was a vibrant, insightful, and community-driven event that celebrated the achievements of the Ethereum network and looked forward to its future.

For us, it was an unforgettable experience filled with insightful sessions, engaging side events, and invaluable networking opportunities. We were proud to be able to be part of this whole movement, providing infrastructure to builders around the world to harness the power of blockchain technology.

And of course we enjoyed plenty of Belgium beer, fries and waffles!
